Two and a Half Weeks in Vine City

Image

Vine City is a really beautiful place with so much potential! The residents here have been hit extremely hard by the financial crisis. Whether it is joblessness, homelessness, foreclosures, or schoolclosings, these people just can’t get a leg up! But we are here to help. In any way that we can. What Vine City is lacking is more available transportation, more local businesses, and definitely lots of localized foodsources like gardens. It seems as though this place has almost been forgotten my big business and the city… which I think is a godsend, since it’s not completely corporatized or heavily controlled. That means that there is so much room for the community to come together and take ownership of the town.

Shadows on our tent ceiling. It was beautiful to wake up to the sounds of trees in the wind and plenty of birds singing. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard or seen so much wildlife in the city before. ^_^!

Vine City is rightly named. There are vines everywhere claiming the landscape and adding a gorgeous character to the place.

I love the subtle architecture hidden throughout the neighborhoods. It makes for a great place to explore and live curiously.

My favorite part of Vine City is when the wind blows you are almost guaranteed to smell honeysuckles anywhere. Mmm!

Sally Mason is such a wonderful spirit to be involved in helping this community. She’s been cleaning up Joseph Lowery Blvd with the help of some awesome Occupy Atlanta protesters and creating block parties to get the community together for fun and to talk about gardening in the community. It’s very important that people begin to grow their own food and teach younger generations how to garden so we don’t become or continue to be so reliant or dependent on the government or corporate food supply. Take the initiative to become self-sufficient today and your life will become much more enjoyable and stress-free. Promise!

When the going gets tough and you are lacking in resources, innovation is key! Haha! Barrel + Pot + Planter wire + a Stick = A Way to Cook Dinner! hehehe

A kitty found us one day. My friend Mike Anthony gave this kitty to the neighbor of Pamela Flores and he’s so happy with her. :3
